02The Collection

Four addresses,
each read from its ground.

The autumn register gathers four residences across three coastlines. Each is listed with its survey: where it sits, what it holds, and who drew it.

03Approach

We begin where the land rises, and admit only the houses that the contour allows.

CONTOUR is a studio of surveyors, editors and agents. We work as a gallery works: few houses, closely studied, presented with their context intact. Three readings precede every listing.

  1. Red sandstone buttes rising from a flat desert floor under a pale sky.
    I

    Land

Every acquisition begins with a 1:500 survey. We read slope, aspect, wind and water before we read a floor plan, and we decline houses that argue with their ground.

  2. Stacked white rectilinear volumes of a building seen from below against a pale blue sky.
    II

    Architecture

We favour architects who subtract — who let a wall carry shadow, a window frame a single view, and a plan follow the line the land has already drawn.

  3. Curving terracotta-coloured facade fins sweeping upward into a deep blue sky.
    III

    Material

Lime plaster, limestone, oiled oak, weathered metal. Materials are chosen for how they age in place, so that a house grows quieter and more exact with time.

04Flagship — Edition 07

Eucalypt House

Red Hill, Mornington Peninsula

38°22′ S 145°01′ E

A contemporary house of dark timber and glass at dusk, its interior glowing beneath the canopy of a mature eucalyptus.

A house drawn around a single tree.

Set on the northern fall of a vineyard ridge, Eucalypt House is planned around a two-hundred-year-old manna gum that the architects refused to move. Two timber volumes step down the contour, meeting at a glazed hinge that holds the tree in view from every principal room.

Inside, a herringbone stone wall carries the warmth of the afternoon into the evening, and the floor follows the land in three shallow terraces.

05Private inquiry

Every address begins
with a conversation.

Viewings are arranged privately, with the surveyor and architect present where possible, so that a house is first understood from its ground.

A note on this register

CONTOUR is a conceptual architecture and luxury-property showcase created by ATH ARC. The residences, architects, studios and figures shown here are fictional concepts; none is offered for sale, and no inquiries are taken.
